Securities Industry Essentials (SIE)

This is an introductory exam  for prospective securities industry professionals that is designed to assess a candidates knowledge of the basics of the securities industry.  The exam focuses on types of products and types of risks, understanding the securities markets, regulatory agencies, and prohibited practices.
To become eligible as a registered representative, an individual must pass the Essentials exam and the appropriate qualifying exam for their type of business.

The exam consists of 75 multiple choice questions.
You will have 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete it.
You must have a passing score of 70%.

The exam is open to anyone 18 years of age or older.
You do not have to be associated with a firm to take this exam.
Exam results are valid for 4-years.

Securities Series 6

The investment company and variable contracts products representative qualification exam.
This exam assesses the competency of an entry-level representative to perform their job as an investment company and variable contracts products representative.

Candidate must be associated with and sponsored by a FINRA member firm or other applicable self-regulatory organization (SRO) member firm to be eligible to take the exam.

The SIE is a corequisite to this exam.  Candidates must pass both the Series 6 exam and the SIE exam to obtain this registration.

Content Outline

The Series 6 Content Outline provides a comprehensive guide to the range of topics covered on the exam, as well as the depth of knowledge required. The outline is comprised of the four main job functions of an investment company and variable contracts products representative.

Securities Series 63

The Uniform Securities State Law Examination is a North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) exam administered by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).  

The exam covers the principles of state securities regulation reflected in the Uniform Securities Act.  The exam is intended to provide a basis for state securities administrators to determine an applicant's knowledge and understanding of state law and regulations.

The exam consists of 65 multiple-choice questions covering the topics listed in the study guide.  Of the 65 questions, 60 count towards the final score.  The 5 remaining questions are being pre-tested to possibly be included in future exams.

The following waiting periods apply for individuals needing to retake the Series 63 following a failed attempt:

(1) a minimum of 30 days after failing the first exam before the second taking of the exam can be scheduled;
(2) a minimum of 30 days after failing the exam for the second time before the third taking of the exam can be scheduled; and
(3) a minimum of 180 days after failing the exam for a third time before the fourth taking of the exam (and each subsequent taking) can be scheduled.
